
Figs are the basic ingredient of human nutrition for over 3.000 years. The ancient Mediterranean cultures valued it so much that many times they favored it over bread. Even at the Hanging Gardens of Babylon people planted fig trees.
Figs were the main meal of the athletes that took part at the Ancient Olympic Games before every competition rich in vitamins A, B, C, minerals such as calcium, copper, manganese, selenium, zinc, phosphorus, potassium and iron as well as antioxidants.
- They lower blood pressure as they are rich in potassium.
- They lower blood sugar and glucose and thus reduce the occurrence of type II diabetes.
- They strengthen our bones thanks to their calcium content.
- They fight constipation because they contain soluble fiber.
- They contribute to the hormonal balance thanks to the amino acid arginine.
- They protect our body from various diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, various degenerative diseases and premature aging due to phenols.
- They are beneficial for health because they increase energy, have tonic properties, protect the skin, have digestive and diuretic effects, relieve asthma, bronchitis, pharyngitis.
Fig has also a symbolism around it. Filled with all these tiny seeds, it ended up symbolizing fertility and prosperity, unity and knowledge.
For someone northern, figs are another exotic fruit, something strange and expensive, something he buys by the piece and tastes like a RARE delicacy
But for all of us, the fig is part of our heritage.
